On Monday morning, I was so excited that I couldn’t get up. I was so excited for Outdoor Ed, for in a couple hours, I would be away from home, school, and my normal life. We were going to Snake Road camp on Lake Geneva. I was especially excited about this because my grandma would be close by, staying at our lake house. I could tell that this was going to be a great three days.

Pulling into camp was astonishing, being back at Lake Geneva was amazing, and the house we were going to stay in looked great. After we got off the bus and loaded our things in our rooms, we went down to play carpet ball and look at the lake. Carpet ball, another game I have played, was a very fun thing. You would have a carpeted, slender table and you would have a couple billiards balls at each end and you would have one that you would throw at the other persons end to nock the balls into the dead end of the table. It was really fun!

Team Building (Low Ropes)
On the Monday afternoon when we got there, we did team building activities that got challenging. My favorite one was where you got blind folded and had to walk down a rocky trail, only by people using their voices. I liked this because when I went, I had to climb over things without my eyes and learned what it is like to be blind and have people guide you around. Another fun activity was getting to choose a dream job; the bad part was getting it. We had to jump through a rope as a team to get it. All in all, it was fun.
Insects (Entomology)
In insects, we learned about insects and their body parts. Entomology means the study of insects. We learned the insects have six legs and three main body parts, this was interesting for me because I thought that a spider was an insect, but it has eight legs. We also learned lots of new bugs, like the leafhopper. It is like the grasshopper but hops on leafs. We also got to create edible insects, with gumdrops, licorice, and other things too. It had to have the three parts that a normal insect would have. That was a fun part of insects because in the end, we got to eat them.
Survival
Survival was my favorite activity because we had to make a shelter as if we had no home and were stranded. This was fun for me because we learned what you would have to do to have a good survival shelter witch would consist of insulation, for warmth, and other things too. Then, we had to go out into the forest and make a shelter with logs, and other things to help support it. This was super cool because we were set free and didn’t have many guide lines for the shelters, except for that we all had to fit in it and to be careful. This is why survival was my favorite activity.
Archery
Another fun subject was archery. In archery, we learned the safety guidelines for archery, and what and what not to do to keep safe. This was another fun topic because this is not something that we get to do every day. This was also fun because we got to shoot arrows at targets and balloons as a competition. Dry fire is something that you don’t want to do and it is when you shoot the bow with out an arrow. This creates wear and tear on the bow and it could snap the string. This is dangerous because the string can snap back at you and could hurt you. Another dangerous thing in archery is if you get hit with an arrow. This could be life threatening if you are hit in certain spots, but others may not be so bad. I got hit in the finger with an arrow and I only got a scratch. Either way, you don’t want to do it.
Nature Awareness
In nature awareness, we learned about plants and other things about plants. Sadly, we couldn’t do his outside because when we had nature awareness, it was raining, but it was still fun. In this, we learned about plants and how to recognize them using our five scenes. One of the activities we did was where we has out thumbs taped so we had hands like squirrels and we had to pick up candy that is being thrown at us. Then we got to eat it; witch was also a challenge to open the wrappers. Another thing we did was tree recognizing. This was also a challenge because we were blind folded and a partner guided us to a tree blind and we had to find it again blind. I found mine by tasting the tree and then tasting it again. In this we learned what it is like to be an animal in nature.
Orienteering
In orienteering, we learned how to use a compass and program it to take us in any direction that we wanted to go. In this activity, we partnered up and went around in the forest trying to find certain points and when we found one, we marked our compass to the point where we next needed to go. Sadly, my partner and I did not get to the first tree because we were so confused. Another thing we did was take a penny, lay it on the ground somewhere, and have Mr. Ogden tell us to set our compass and take a certain amount of steps and we would be at our penny.
New Games
New games was another fun subject, like most others. There were three games we played, Ultimate nerf, Capture The Flag, and kick ball. The only new game to me was ultimate nerf, but it was still really fun. It was really similar to ultimate Frisbee, but with a nerf football, you threw it around to your teal mates and once they catch the ball, they cannot move and have to throw it to another player until they get it into the end zone. The next game we played was capture the flag. It was the normal capture the flag with some modifications, when you got tagged you had to go the other teams side and be in their jail, and if you had enough people, you could make a chain for someone to come tag the next person on the chain. It was really interesting. Our last game was kickball. Kickball was the normal kickball but with a larger ball so you could kick it further. This was a great teambuilding exercise.
High Ropes/Climbing Wall
High ropes were in my top three best activities because we got to climb around and be free off the ground. One of the courses I went on was the tight rope where you had another line on top of you to hang on to instead of just the rope, I hung upside down and held on to the top rope instead of using the bottom one and army crawled across the top. I think that that was the only one I did. We had a choice to do a huge ladder with a partner and climb up it with a strategy. Me and my partner Matthew climbed up it after some other groups and we were the first to make it to the top! That was very exciting for me because I didn’t think we could do it.
Right after that I was called to the climbing wall to climb. I went up the side rock wall and made it to the top pretty fast, but at the top, there was a zip line that you went down after you got to the top. I had not been on a zip line in a long time so this was another fun thing too. Some people were scared to go down, but I took a step off and I was on my way! It was awesome!
Closing
In conclusion, out door Ed was really fun, adventurous and exciting. Lots of us had never had any experiences like this before so this was an adventure for them as well as it were for me.
