Depart from MM

We were all at Marie Murphy getting ready to go onto the bus, but before we left we had to get our luggage into and onto the busses. While we waited to leave all the students and some of the staff went into the community room to watch a movie.

Arrival

When we arrived at Snake River all of the kids were told to go to the field to rest for a while. After that a team camp counselor came to tell the sixth grade students and staff about the rules and regulations of the camp.

Group Games

For group games we had the Snake River staff teach the sixth graders some new games that they had made up for us that were very fun and entertaining. Some of the games were not normally what someone would play.

Lunch

Lunch for the first day was grilled cheese, salad, soda pop, and lots more yummy treats. I sat at a table with the two Mr. H’s, Elena, Maya, Michelle, Colleen and Alex. I had a wonderful time sitting with them the three days I was at Snake River

Low Ropes team courses

In the low ropes courses we all gathered into our groups and split up with our team leaders and went off into the woods to find a place to hike. When we found our destination we stopped and started to talk about where we were and what we were going to do. After we did a lot of thinking we started to do the tasks that we were told by the counselor.

Dinner

For dinner the first night I had spaghetti and meatballs, garlic bread, hot cocoa and brownies. Over all I thought the dinner was not the best but I was still thankful to have something to eat.

Relay Races

For the relay races we had all the MM teachers and staff come into the big gym with all the students. The gym teachers had all theses amazing fun games that we could play. I had my team group with some of my girl cabin mates and the other boys.

Dorm Time

Our cabin stayed up very late talking and playing in our cabins Some of the time we would work on our journals.

ALL SILENT!!!

When its lights out that means that we all have to get into bed and go to sleep and we are not allowed to talk for the rest of the night except for a little whispering. My girl friends and I would just talk about our day and what we did in our different groups because we were all separated into different groups except for a few of us.

Tuesday

Breakfast

It was a cold morning. Everyone got ready to go to breakfast. We had bacon, eggs, sausage and some warm bread. The breakfast was delicious. Our entire table had so much fun at breakfast lunch and dinner. We had such a great time.

Entomology

In entomology we learned about all different kinds of bugs and insects. We learned that all bugs have to have six legs to be considered a bug. They all have a thorax and their eyes are compound. After we learned so much about bugs we got to play a little game where we had a type of bug taped to our backs, it was like 20 questions. At the end of entomology we all had to make a candy bug. We didn’t forget the important parts of the body either.

Orienteering

In orienteering we learned about how to use a compass. Some of the adventures that we took doing orienteering were the coin find, compass trace and the team letter find. In the coin find we were supposed to take any kind of coin, place it onto a leaf or rock anything basically that you could find it on again if you left it sitting there. Mr. Ogden would give us a number to trace and then we would have to walk to that spot and find our way back to our coin by Mr. Ogden giving us a hint. After that Mr. Ogden had us partner up with two or more people. Then he gave us a card that had areas to go in the direction of using a compass. It would lead us to a different letter every time. We would have to write the letter down and then take the sheet over to Mr. Ogden and he would check it. for us. It was really fun because we got to explore in the woods without a guidance counselor.

Survival

For survival we had to learn how to make wooden houses and a campfire. What I thought we needed in this survival unit was team building, signals, and supplies, resources and support. I thought all of those things went along with survival because it would help you in a real situation. It would also help you survive if you were in a group. That is why team building helps.

Wash-up Journal morning

It was morning and very cold out. w We all were able to play on the field. When I was in the field with my friends we played football with some of the boy teachers… Mr. Kolcz, and Mr. Thurston. We had so much fun playing in the field. It was big and pretty.

Lunch

For lunch we had PIZZA! The pizza was delicious and very tasty. Another thing that we had that went along with the lunch were some really good bread sticks. When the head counselor told us we could go up for seconds all of the kids had already been up for thirds. We were hungry.

New Games

In new games we had our entire group came to the big field and learned games like, ultimate nerf, capture the flag and kickball. We already knew how to play two games out of the three that we picked. Whenever we set teams up I always got Mr. Kolcz. I liked that because he is a very good athlete.

Archery

In archery what I thought that we had to focus, listen, and just have fun. I thought that we had to do all those things because Archery to me seems like a lot of work to do. You have to have total focus to aim the arrow into the target. I enjoyed archery because you and your friends get to have a lot of fun. Overall I thought that archery was very fun.

Nature

It was a very nice day out and we were all ready for nature class. It looked like it was going to rain. Soon I felt a tiny raindrop fall onto my face and then there were more. It started to rain more and more so then we had to go upstairs into the lounge of the boys dorm. It was very nice. It had a big fireplace and many windows. When we got all settled into the room we learned some new games. One of them was call happy squirrel. For the happy squirrel we had our team leaders tape our thumbs to our hands. I watched the tape go around and around my hand. We had tasks that we had to do. I tried to tie my shoes. I did very well at that task.

Group games

Dinner

For dinner I had chicken strips, mashed potatoes and peach cobbler. It was an amazing dinner. All of my friends loved it too. Some even went up for thirds and fourths. I didn’t even know that they could eat that much.

Games in JAC

When all the sixth graders played games at night we would all go down into what was called the JAC. That is where we did relay races and other fun games. We had to stay in the JAC until the campfire. It was so fun. I played basketball, volleyball and soccer. I had really good teams for all of those sports. It took so long for the games to end and for us all to go down to the campfire area, but we made it and we had fun.

Campfire

It was campfire time and we were all so excited to go eat some tasty smores. It was cold out and drizzling a little bit, but I stayed warm with the nice warm fire next to me, and I was snuggling with my best friends. Eating the smores and sitting by the campfire was great. I loved it! Then, Mrs. Allen came! She showed up right in time for the night's activities. It was amazing.

Night Hike

I was waiting to go on the night hike but none of my friends were going. I always want to stick with my friends when we are doing really fun activities. I also did not go on the night hike because it got really cold out and there were many bugs out. When there were bugs I didn’t want to be out when they were out. But, anyway, I thought that it would have been fun. Since I didn’t go I stayed with my friends in my cabin, and played games and worked on my journaling.

Lights out

When it was time for lights out that night I went straight to sleep because I knew that I had a big day ahead of me. I was very tired.

Wednesday

Pack

It was time for packing, and my cabin started to clear out. I was sad to leave but I was excited to get home and see my family. I missed them so much. When we were finally all done with clearing out the cabin we checked one more time and headed down the hill.

Breakfast

For breakfast that morning I had eggs, fruit and sausage. It was a very yummy breakfast. My friends at my table were laughing so hard that I thought their drinks would come out of their noses.

High Ropes and Zip line

For the high ropes and the zip line I thought that you would have to have perseverance, listening, and focus. I thought you needed to have all those things because when you are on a climbing wall that is 50ft high you want to keep your eyes open for anyone in your way, or for something distracting you.

Lunch

For lunch before we left we got to eat tacos, nachos cheese, rice crispy treats and tamales!!!!! It was so amazing. I thought I was at a Mexican restaurant! I thought that it was a very good lunch to have before leaving.

Leave

We were all so sad to leave, but we were excited to see our family. We all got on the bus for the last time and said good-bye to Snake River Park and we were on our way home!

In Math we were assigned a project, it was called a proportions project. One of my choices was to do the job interview. I did the job interview on my dad, my interview was about how my father uses Rates, Ratios and Proportions. This is an example from my project how my father uses rates, rations and proportions. Lets say one of my fathers vendors gives him a better price if he spends at least $1,000 at a time. Suppose that supplier makes both screwdrivers that cost $2.00 each and hammers that cost $5.00 each. Suppose he generally sells twice as many screwdrivers as hammers. He normally needs to spend $2.00 x 2 for every two screwdrivers he buys compared to $5.00 x 1 for every one hammer. So if he starts out with no inventory, he would try to buy enough of those two groups to get him to $1000 in purchases. That would work out to be about 222 screwdrivers and 111 hammers minimum. So he takes the proportion 2 to 1 to determine the number of screwdrivers he needs to buy compared with the number of hammers. He has to consider the difference in the price of the two and then increase both quantities as necessary to get to the best price. That is one example from my Job Interview. My favorite part of doing the Interview is being able to get time to talk with my dad and to get to know more about him and his Business.

*This is the first writing example for the - 2010 school year. It has not been edited. I hope You enjoy my letter!

September 2, 2010

Dear Mom and Dad,

I am looking forward to as a 6th grader is, being able to do more then just good in all my classes, I want to do great! I am also looking forward to learning new things and being able to meet new friends. I also want to meet new teachers that I have never met before.

When you come to Marie Murphy I want you to see where my Homeroom class is, where I go for Resource and lastly where I go for Gym I would like you to see those classes because they are different classes that some kids would normally tell you to go to and see. I love all my classes.

The two goals I want to achieve are getting at least all A’s and B’s but that might not happen and my other goal is, getting to go on more then just one school team. Just because I love soccer doesn’t mean I cannot do it. But I love every sport and I do a lot of sports.

When you come and go from the classes I told you about, well I forgot to tell you the room numbers. My English room number is 161 it is the first door on your right when you first enter the 6th grade hallway, my Resource class number is 182and last but not least my Gym class number is 125. I hope you have fun at my school. My homeroom teachers name is Mrs.Bialk, but I am pretty sure you can call her Andrea. Have Fun!

Love, Christina

As a concluding activity for our study of the Scientific Method, students worked through a variety of bacteria investigations. Students were provided a lab template which provided them with a six-step outline of the scientific method for problem solving. Using those steps and sterile nutrient agar plates, students collected bacteria in an attempt to answer their original question. Bacterial growth was documented through qualitative and quantitative observations as well as digital photographs. The following lab report is this student's attempt at a bacterial investigation. (Mr. Peter Ogden: Sixth Grade Science Teacher)

My favorite character was Jonathan because he was able to see what the war was like and he also got to be in the war. I would especially want to see what the war would be like. But I also like Jonathan because he is taking his father's place in the war. Jonathan's father has been very badly wounded in the war before that’s why he dropped out so Jonathan could take his place. The character I did not like which was Jonathan's general. He would always be mean to his solders, but I’m not going to tell you anything else because you will have to read the book for that. I would recommend this book to some boys and some girls because this book is mainly about the war and how it started for Jonathan and ended for his father. I would also give this book a **** star rating.

There is this wonderful family that hasn't told their children what their baby's name is. The baby died from a tragic accident when it was first born. Their 12 year old daughter Larkin returns home one day to discover a baby sitting in a basket in their driveway of her family's house. The only clue to the baby's appearance is a note from the baby's m0ther. It reads "This is Sophie, She is almost one year old and she is good... I will come back for her one day. I love her." If you want to know the rest you will have to read the book to find out. I would think that my favorite character is Sophie, I do not have a dislike of a character. What I liked in the book was all the telling of description in the book. I would recomend this book to anybody who likes babies. I would give this book a 5 star*****

There are many characters in the book but my favorite is Nancy. Nancy is my favorite because she solves all the action packed things and she does all the critical thinking. What I liked about the book was that there were scary parts and some spooky things too, for example when Katie flipped in the air I thought that doing an acrobatic trick or the judges. But actually when I was reading the book, I thought that I was going into the story. When Nancy was sneaking arround outside at night when everybody was eating their delicious pasta. Nancy was spying on two people she couldn't tell who it was but she did see a face or two. When the two people turned around, Nancy hopped into the boat so they wouldn't see her. When Nancy turned a bit somebody pushed her into the icy cold water and she couldn't tell who it was because they vanished in a hurry. You will have to read the book to find out what happened next. I would give this book a *****star and I would recommend this book to anybody who likes mysteries.
