Reflection Project

December 14th, 2011 Written by 13noahg · Technology

In the past weeks in Creative Tech, we did a reflection project. This is where we took photos and then we put them into Iphoto. In this we chose to make them black & white, sepia, or just change their color.  Then we chose cool backgrounds and write our names in it using Picnik. Then we go into Animoto. We import all of our photos and make it into a slide show by adding music and then choosing a speed. It was a great process.

“If I speak of myself in different ways, that is because I look at myself in different ways.”
― Michel de Montaigne, The Complete Essays

“Reflection must be reserved for solitary hours; whenever she was alone, she gave way to it as the greatest relief; and not a day went by without a solitary walk, in which she might indulge in all the delight of unpleasant recollections.”
― Jane Austen

“Sleep seems to hammer out for me the logical conclusions of my vague days, and offer them to me as dreams. ”
― D.H. Lawrence

“The past can’t be changed, can it? It can just be forgiven.”

“Rarely if ever, moments come that are so defining in our lives. The years are glutted with benign matters which impact us more deeply than we could have ever imagined in our youth.”
― Joel T. McGrath

“There is no future without a past, because what is to be cannot be imagined except as a form of repetition.”

Idioms and Compounds

October 6th, 2011 Written by 13noahg · Technology

In Creative Tech we did a project which involved showing the meaning of idioms and compounds. We showed these in pictures. I did many words and sayings. I showed them in the literal meaning for each word, then I put them together to form the full meaning. I did this with 5 idioms and 5 compounds. I took one picture of the background usually and then got the rest from the internet. I did some very great pictures. I exported them in Animoto. Animoto is a website that makes presentations for you. I put my pictures in it, selected my music and made this. It was a great experience. Then we had to write the meaning of the word and it’s origin. For compounds we wrote the definition of the combined word and of the 2 words inside of it.

My song is called Spring. I named it this because it reminds me of springtime when the leaves start growing back. The hardest part about making my song is coming up with a title to match you’re music because not all titles make sense.

My Snake River Adventure

Snake River Adventure Center

Noah Goldberg

May 2-4, 2011

Lake Geneva, Wisconsin

Dear Journal,

Our school (Marie Murphy) went to Snake River Adventure Center for an outdoor education experience. We went from May 2 to May 4, 2011. Snake River is in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin. I participated in many activities like ropes course, archery, and survival activities. I had so much fun and I learned many things like how to use a compass, how to identify an insect, how to use teamwork, and how to shoot a bow. Outdoor education was a great experience and it was so much fun.

Dear Journal,

After we ate lunch we had team building activities. In my group there was Arch, Joe, Chase, Michael, Jagr, Maya, Yesol, Carissa, Danielle, Jonathan, J.B., Payton, and I.OE Group 2064

We did many activities. We did jump rope, spider web,OE Group 2007

which taught us speed. We did bomb walking, which was walking a stick with only the top of our fingers. We did the blind fold game where we trust one person to walk us around with blindfolds on.OE Group 2030

We did helium stick, which we lead a hoolahoop down to the ground as a team.OE Group 2020

We did low ropes to cross from one place to another. There were many arguments about where people should move and who was the leader. No one was a leader. We were all leaders.

Dear Journal,

The next day we woke up, went to breakfast, and then we went to orienteering. Mr. Ogden was our teacher.OE Group 2038

We talked about how to use a compass and how a compass works. A compass works by magnetic pulls from the north and south poles. They line up the black and red magnetic pieces to north and south. We did activities like find the penny and find the letters. We had an amount of degrees and number of steps to figure out where each letter was in the woods. I found the find the penny activity difficult because I didn’t know how to have the exact same length footsteps.

Dear Journal,

Then we went to survival. At survival we learned about fire and the needs to make and maintain a fire. We build log cabin style and start with small sticks and add bigger ones. We learned how to fuel our fires and how to keep our fires under control. Next in nature we made shelters for our groups. We learned that you should make a shelter within three hours. I learned it is easier to build a fort from something that is already standing then from something that is not there yet. The most valuable thing I learned in survival was how long you can live without certain things like water, food, and shelter.

Dear Journal,

After we went to new games course. First we played Frisbee keep away. This is when there are two teams trying to pass around the Frisbee and steal it from the other team. If the team with the Frisbee passes it five times then they win the round. If the defending team intercepts it three times then they win the round. At the end we tied because the offense won every time because offense has the advantage of getting it back if they drop it or the other defense drops it. Next we played link tag. This is when you grab a partner and you link up in a field. Then there is a tagger and a runner. The runner can link up with two people but the person on the far side of the link has to be the runner. The tagger can also do this. If the tagger touches the runner, they switch places. The last thing we did was called ultimate nerf.OE Group 2046

This is a game where you try throwing the ball to score a touchdown. The only problem is the person with the ball can’t move. The strategy was to throw short throws to people but I just through them long. At the end I realized that the only way to accomplish our goals is to work together.

Dear Journal,

We had lunch and then we went to archery. At archery we learned how to hold the bow and proper stance. We learned to hold the bow down when we are loading. We learned always to point the bow away from people. We also learned if we lose an arrow not to go get it. In archery we played games like hit the animal and bullseye. We also played hit the balloon. The parts to the arrow and the bow is the bow string, cam, bottom limb, limb bolt, stabilizer mount, grip, slight window, limb pocket, bow riser, cable rod, buss cable, string silencer, idler wheel, cable slide, and arrow shelf. In hit the balloon we had a balloon that is worth 25 five points. Then the animal is 20 points. Then the brown is 15 points. The white is 5 points.

Dear Journal,

We next did nature awareness. The first activity we did was our feel activity. We closed our eyes and then were handed a rock. We had to open our eyes and had to choose which rock we had based on feel. We also binded our thumbs to our hands and see how life is like for a chipmunk.OE Group 2066

Then we did another activity where we had to be blindfolded walk around and find a tree. Then we walked back and unblindfolded ourselves and tried to find our tree. Our final activity was an activity where we walked around searching for hints on what to find. We searched with our noses because the clue smelled like peppermint. I learned that without our senses we would be incapable of living. The most difficult thing about the scent hike was that the clues were hidden.

Dear Journal,

The last team activity we did was insect study or entomology. We learned about what makes an insect a bug and what makes a bug an insect. One of the activities we did was having a picture of an insect on our back and asking other people questions to figure it out. Next we looked at some dead bugs. We learned what makes them unique. The last thing we did was making an insect. We used candy to make our own insect. We announced it’s talents and what it eats. After that we ate it.OE Group 2078

Dear Journal,

The last day we went to climbing and high ropes. It was the most exciting thing at camp. My group was first to the climbing wall. We had three walls to choose to climb. I chose the rock wall. I climbed even though I didn’t feel well. Since I was last my hands were numb. I couldn’t get to the top because my hands stopped working halfway up. I was fine with it because I tried my best. Then we did high ropes. I went on the straight walk. I did many tricks and then flew down to the ground. It was a great experience.

Dear Journal

The food was great everyday accept for the last day where we had Mexican food for Cinco De Mayo. We were only allowed to have soda at dinner but at lunch and breakfast we could have lemonade and hot chocolate. The first meal when we arrived was grilled cheese and tomato soup. It was great. Especially dipping the grilled cheese in ketchup. The second meal was pizza. You can even see the different cheeses in it. The next meals were pasta and other great foods. There was also chicken nuggets. The fruit and dessert were also very good.

Dear Journal,

I know I will always appreciate outdoor ed. I had so much fun and I think everybody else did too. Lake Geneva was a blast even though we didn’t swim. We played carpetball, space invaders, and many others. I will always remember the great times I had with my friends at outdoor education.

Math Project Interview

March 3rd, 2011 Written by 13noahg · Math

I chose to do an interview because I was curious on things that I didn't think required math. I asked my dad who is a lawyer how he uses math. He said there are many different ways but here are a few.

My dad is a lawyer. I asked him how he uses proportions in his job. He represents people who buy and sell houses. In a typical house sale, the seller gives the buyer a credit for real estate taxes that the seller owes but the buyer will have to pay. To figure out the credit, he uses the ratio of the number of days out of a year that the seller owns the house divided by the number of days in a year (365).

Also my dad represents people who are injured in accidents due to someone else’s negligence. He charges the clients a customary fee represented by the ratio of 33/100 multiplied by the amount recovered from the person who caused the accident. Part of what he recovers is the amount of their medical bills. Sometimes the amount of the bills is higher than the amount he recovers. They pay each of the medical providers pro rata with the ratio being the numerator is the amount of their bill and the denominator is the total amount of all the medical bills multiplied by the amount of the recovery allotted to payment of medical bills.

He also represents clients in divorce cases and one of the things he has to do is divide the property that the couple acquired during the marriage. Sometimes each person is awarded the ratio of 50 divided by 100 multiplied by the value of the property acquired during the marriage. Other times there is a disproportionate division of the marital property. For example one spouse may be awarded 2/3 of the property while the other 1/3.

Another type of case he handles is collection of debts. For various reasons, the creditor may agree to accept less than the full amount that is owed. For example the creditor may accept 3/4 or 2/3 the amount that is owed.

Sometimes he represents people who are making a will. One of the things a will does is it states who will get the persons property when they die. Sometimes the person will divide the property up in shares represented by ratios. The numerator is one and the denominator is the number of people who get the property.

Mi año en la clase de español

February 28th, 2011 Written by 13noahg · Spanish

In Spanish class I have learned the form of gustar and the form of ser. I have also learned about the coqui frog – the symbol of Puerto Rico. I’ve liked the fly swatter game. This is when the teacher says a word and we have to swat it in the opposite language. I also like Spanish jeopardy. Walkabouts are fun too. This is when the teacher puts pictures around the room and we have to use our vocab skills to describe them.  I am proud of my most recent Spanish test. I wrote an essay and I had to answer some other questions.

Back to School – 6th Grade

October 19th, 2010 Written by 13noahg · English

*This is my first writing example of the year. It has not been edited.

Dear parents,

I’m having a great time at Marie Murphy. But I’m looking forward to going to Outdoor Education because I like going to overnight camp. I like to sleep away from home with my friends because I find home boring. I really want to know what we’re doing there. I hope a teacher doesn’t sleep in our cabin because they will make it less fun for me.

When you are at Marie Murphy you should visit the Spanish room and meet the new Spanish teacher. The Spanish room is the last room in the 7th grade hallway. I know Rachel really ”enjoys” the new teacher. I’m learning a lot in Spanish and the teacher is doing a good job. The Spanish room is really cool looking. Now Marie Murphy has Promethean boards. (Touch screen projectors)

My goals this year are doing a good job in school and beating my score on the mile. I think I will accomplish the new one for sure. The second one I think I will accomplish because of the Wilmette Wings. I will train through the Wings to build stamina and endurance. I will study to get good grades. (Hopefully straight A’s)

I hope you had a great time at open house. I hope you are satisfied with how I’ve been doing and how well my work is. Next conference I hope you can see my growth.

Love your son,

Noah

Bacterial Lab

October 19th, 2010 Written by 13noahg · Science

As a concluding activity for our study of the Scientific Method, students worked through a variety of bacteria investigations. Students were provided a lab template which provided them with a six-step outline of the scientific method for problem solving. Using those steps and sterile nutrient agar plates, students collected bacteria in an attempt to answer their original question. Bacterial growth was documented through qualitative and quantitative observations as well as digital photographs. The following lab report is this student’s attempt at a bacterial investigation.   (Mr. Peter Ogden: Sixth Grade Science Teacher)

Fun Data Graph

This is a graph about peoples favorite grades. Out of all of the options the most people picked 2nd grade for their favorite grade. I chose 2nd grade also. What I thought was not right about this was that I chose second grade because of my teacher not the activities. This is mostly a U- shaped graph.
