The Dragonfly Pool

The Dragonfly pool

By: Eva Ibbotson

Blurb by: Youngjin K.

Karin’s father, the king of Bergania, is assassinated and if Tally and her friends at Delderton help him from getting away from Karin’s parents from the palace and if they don’t then, Karin gets pulled in to his bleak future of him and the palace, dead. Destroyed by the Nazis. But he can be saved and he depends on the people of Delderton for that. I liked this book because it has a problem you might think of but then it is not the problem. I do not like this book because when it switches places in the book it gets confusing.

I would not recommend this book to a friend because it has lot of confusing parts in the book. My favorite character is Kit because he comes from a different country that plays cricket and he doesn’t understand any of the other games and he becomes a very humorous character in the book. The main character changes from a little tiny country girl to a girl who is a life-saving person.

Max the Mighty

March 25th, 2010 Written by 13youngjink · Book Review

Max the Mighty

By: Rodman Philbrick

Blurb by: Youngjin K.

Max is back, but without Freak, so he just hides in the Down Under, or his basement until the most terrifying thing happens. He is framed for almost killing Rachel’s mother. So Max runs away with the girl, Rachel, to meet Rachel’s real dad, not her step-dad, the Undertaker and the one who actually beat up Rachel’s mom. I did not like that the story had two character’s named Dippy Hippie and Hobo Joe, because those two characters really throw off the storyline of that Max and Rachel are trying to run away from the Undertaker. I liked that the story had easy dialogue so you can read the story without thinking too hard.

I would recommend this book to a friend because the book hooks you in until the end and it has a very good ending. My favorite character was the Undertaker because he always says crazy things so that they do what he wants. The main character, Max, changes from thinking he’s safe and he thinks everyone around him is safe to being a little more cautious.

Pendragon; the Merchant of Death

Pendragon; the Merchant of Death

By D. J. MacHale

Blurb by Youngjin K.

Bobby Pendragon is just a normal 14-year old boy. He has a family, a home, and even a dog. But something is very special about Bobby; he is going to save the world, and not just our world, everything, everyplace, everyone. He writes in his journals to Courtney and Mark and he writes to them about his adventure on Denduron, a place with three suns, and he figures, it is just the beginning. I liked that the story was about traveling through space and time, and that the way they wrote it actually was like how we think. I did not like the book because it switched from first person, in Bobby’s journal, to third person, on Earth/Second Earth.

I would recommend this to a friend because it was a good book and it had lots of action in the end. My favorite character was Bobby’s Uncle Press because he always stayed calm even when it was time to panic. The main character changed from being very normal like everyone else to courageous and very curious about everything. I would rate this book 4 out of 5 stars.

The Westing Game

The Westing Game

By Ellen Raskin

Blurb by Youngjin K.

Sam Westing’s life got taken, but by who? There are 16 mysteriously chosen heirs of Sam Westing’s will, but one of the heirs took Westing’s life and the only way to find out is to play the Westing game. If they win they get 2 million dollars. This book takes place near Lake Michigan, Wisconsin. I liked the story because it has lots of twists and the conclusion only appears in the end. I did not like the story because it had lots of stock prices and it got very confusing because stock prices do not help with the conclusion.

I would recommend this to a friend because it has lots of twists to keep you reading until the end. My favorite character is Turtle, because she finds the solution to the Westing game and she becomes a friend of Sandy McSouthers, who becomes an important character in the end. I don’t know who would be the real main character because all of the heirs of the Westing will get noted in the book pretty often and it does not have the book focused on one person.

Reflection on Ruth Spiro’s visit

January 24th, 2010 Written by 13youngjink · Library

Ruth Spiro came to our school and she told us about her book: “Lester Fizz Bubble Gum Artist”. She told us about how she wrote it and talked about being an author.  I learned that authors have to edit their book many, many, many times. Ruth Spiro edited the book 37 times.  Another thing about making a book is that the editors will probably  tell you to continue to edit the book even though you think it is the final copy.

I connected to the book because I was kind of  like Lester Fizz because I couldn’t figure out what kind of art I was good at.

Each Little Bird That Sings

December 18th, 2009 Written by 13youngjink · Book Review

Each Little Bird That Sings

By Deborah Wiles

Blurb by Youngjin K.

Comfort Snowberger is extremely comfortable around death and the dead. Soon, Comfort’s Great-Great Aunt Florentine dies and then things start to get strange, Comfort’s best friend gets very mean and Peach, Comfort’s cousin, starts to get really annoying. What I liked about the story is that people in the book were not dead-on fantasy, and that Comfort really acts like how old she is so it would be easier to read the text.

What I did not like about the story is that Comfort finishes off the chapter with a “life notice” or letter. I think a letter should not be a finisher.I would recommend this to a friend because if you read the book it would be easy to understand the text. My favorite character is Peach, Comfort’s cousin, because he has a crazy attitude and his attitude just changed after the middle. The main character changed by her acting like everything was fine to finding out their really was problems everywhere popping left and right. I would recommend this book 4 out of 5 stars.

John D. Rockefeller: Anointed With Oil

November 24th, 2009 Written by 13youngjink · Book Review

John D. Rockefeller: Anointed With Oil

By: Grant Segall

Blurb by: Youngjin K.

Who was the richest man in the world? John D. Rockefeller was born in 1839 and he helped change how we use oil pipelines today. I liked how John D. Rockefeller was the richest man in the world but then gave all his money to Charities and his son, John D. Rockefeller Jr. I did not like that people drew bad comics about him.

I would not recommend this book because it says so much things that happen in the future even though they are on the beginning chapters. My favorite person is John D. Rockefeller Jr. because he is John D‘s second son just like Rockefeller was the second son, Kind of like a family tradition. John D. Rockefeller changed from $0 to the title “ The Richest Man in the World”. I would rate this biography 2 out of 5 star.
