Winter Break begins at 3pm, Friday, December 16th and classes resume January 3rd. The building will be open every day except December 26th and January 2nd.
Bake Sale

Student Council will be running a holiday bake sale on Wednesday, Dec. 14th during lunchtime. Everything will be $1.00. Money collected will go to fund safety sign(s) outside to remind parents about speed and to not use cell phones while driving around our school. Please stop in and have some treats!

Coin War Benefits Bernie’s Book Bank

Avoca West participated in a Coin War at school prior to Thanksgiving Break. With outstanding participation from the entire school, we were able to collect over $1,400 for Bernie’s Book Bank!! You topped last years total by over $300 and will bring the gift of reading to so many kids in our area! Mrs. Zebro’s Class won the war with a total of $149.88! Other top earners were Mrs. Crispin’s Class with $112.20 and Ms. Tramontin’s Class with $99.97. Excellent job Avoca West!

Halloween

The Halloween Tradition Continues at Avoca West!
The annual Halloween Costume Parade will take place at 1:15 p.m. Monday, October 31st.
All parents are invited to watch our parade. It will be held outdoors, weather permitting – otherwise it will be indoors.
Parties start at 1:45 p.m. for grades 1st-5th.
Kindergarten parties start a bit earlier due to their schedule. Please check with your child’s teacher for specifics!
A reminder should be given to all students for a safe and enjoyable Halloween celebration at school. Please go over the following with your child for the day of Halloween:
• Students should not bring toy weapons or dangerous props of any kind with their costumes.
• Masks should not be worn on the bus or while coming to or from school.
• Make-up can be applied at school (preferably by an adult), so parent volunteers are welcomed and encouraged.
• Students will have regular recess & physical education classes throughout the day, so we encourage that costumes not be worn to school.
• All students will change into their costumes after lunchtime.
• If you need to assist your child in getting his/her costume on, please let your child’s teacher know beforehand.
• All students should remember to stay together and in line during the parade.
Please send a bag to school for your child’s treats.
Remember, as always, no judging of costumes is done; all are great!

Welcome Back Events

Please get a babysitter and join us for Avoca West’s Parent Orientation Night on Tuesday, August 30, 2011. Check the schedule below to make sure that you are here at the correct time(s):
Kindergarten and 1st Grade: 8:00-8:45 p.m.
2nd Grade and 3rd Grade: 6:00-6:45 p.m.
4th Grade and 5th Grade: 7:00-7:45 p.m.
All non grade level classroom teachers will be available from 6:45-8:00 p.m.
Our Parent Teacher Council (PTC) will host its annual Back to School Family Picnic and Ice Cream Social on Wednesday, September 7th, from 6:00-7:00 p.m. at AVOCA WEST. Pack your dinner in your picnic baskets, and then enjoy an ice cream dessert, courtesy of the PTC! All Avoca students and their family members are welcome to attend!

Tree down in Avoca West Playground

As you may already know, another tree was knocked down in the oak grove to the west of Avoca West during the storm Wednesday night. We have roped off the area with caution tape, but our arborist will not be able to remove the tree until over the weekend.
Once the tree is removed, we will begin work cleaning up the damaged playground equipment. If you choose to come to the park prior to our clean up, I encourage you to use the new playground to the east and avoid the playground area to the west.
