November 2017 – Accepting Differences

For our first Spirit Assembly of the 2016-17, student leaders focused on accepting and celebrating differences at Avoca West. We were inspired by a poem by Maya Angelou about the diversity of the “Human Family.” In teams, students wrote stanzas for an original poem. Then they created narrated scenes that helped illustrate the meaning of each stanza.

The slideshow below shares the highlights of the assembly. We are so proud of our students ability to teach about the uniqueness of our Avoca Family.

Our next assembly will focus on kindness and compassion.

Problem Solving Assembly 2016

This month’s spirit assembly was all about problem solving. The Assembly Ambassadors taught students the “Problem Solving Steps.”  If a student is having a problem they must first say the problem (without blame).  Next he or she needs to think of solutions that are safe and respectful.  After that a student would need to explore the consequences of their solution (If I do this, then….), Finally, a student needs to pick the best solution and make a plan.  This video was shown at our May spirit assembly to help students understand how to problem solve at school and at home. Our Assembly Ambassadors did an excellent job!

Some ways they can calm down are to count backwards from ten, take deep belly breaths and to use positive self-talk.  This video was shown at our March spirit assembly to help students understand how to manage their emotions at school and at home. They take care of their mind by learning new things, their body by exercising, their heart by spending time with people they love and their soul by taking some time to be reflective.  This video was shown at our June spirit assembly to help students know the different ways they can sharpen the saw at home and at school. Amazing job Assembly Ambassadors!

It is teamwork, open-mindedness, and the adventure of finding new solutions to old problems. This video was shown at our May spirit assembly to help students know the different ways they can Synergize.  Amazing job Assembly Ambassadors!
