Happy Earth Day!

April 20th, 2012 Written by shiht · Uncategorized

We’ve had such a busy, busy week!  We started and completed our recycling sculptures!  They look FANTASTIC! Ms. Naomi taught us about the different parts of the flower and we even got to cook a flower snack!  We read the book, “The Carrot Seed,”  then acted out the story. We used tacks and hammers to make flowers out of pattern blocks!  Our bean plants began sprouting roots.  We also planted sunflower seeds that we’ll watch over the next couple of weeks!  We finally got to make our paper!  We blended it up into a slurry and used a deckle to make recycled paper!  We are so excited to be able to write on our new paper next week!

We’ve had a great week learning about recycling!  We sorted different types of recyclables in the block center.  In the Grocery Store center, the students are learning about the different categories on the food pyramid and sorting foods accordingly.  We started working on our recycled sculptures and the kids have been awesome!  We’ve started the process of making our own recycled paper. We discussed some of the ways that we can help keep Earth clean. We also had a special visit in the PM class. One of the families brought in their pet, a sugar glider!

Hello April!

We hope you all had a wonderful spring break!  This week we began learning about the Earth.  We planted some seeds in plastic bags so we could watch them as they sprout and grow.  We also made some art with glue and bird seeds!  A grocery store was set up in the dramatic play area. Thanks again for all of your donations of empty food containers! Our water table became a pond with lily pads, frogs, and pebbles. We made a “Red Ants on a Log” snack with celery, cream cheese, and Craisins!  It was so delicious!  We also worked very hard making mosaics at the art center! We are excited to learn more about the Earth and how we can take care of it next week!

Have a wonderful weekend and remember there is NO SCHOOL on Friday, April 6th! See you on Monday!

Springtime Has Arrived :)

March 22nd, 2012 Written by shiht · Uncategorized

Happy Spring!  We have had amazing weather this week!  We experimented with the wind and how lighter items fly away and heavier items will stay put. We also made rain sticks!  We read “It Looked Like Spilt Milk” and then made our own cloud creations!  We made it “rain” with colanders at the water table and filled up bottles and bowls!  The morning class created their own spring interpretive dance with the help of an amazing A.C.P. parent!  The kids did such an amazing job and looked great! We did an exploding rainbow experiment at the science center.  The best part of the week was our spring scavenger hunt!  We used our digital cameras and iPads to take pictures of the different spring things on our checklist!  When we got back in the room, the kids all were able to participate in a shared writing activity about the hunt!

Reminder: No school on Friday and Spring Break next week!  See you back on April 2nd!

Happy St. Patrick’s Day!

The leprechaun was on the loose in our classroom this week!  We talked about Ireland, dug for “gold” and patterned using rainbow erasers!  The leprechaun came in and decorated our classroom with shamrocks and rainbows, but the next day he messed it all up! We made leprechaun masks hoping that the leprechaun would give us his gold. :)  The highlight of the week was our leprechaun hunt on Thursday!  We chased him around the WHOLE school!  We never found him but he did leave us some special presents.

Stop, Drop, and Roll

Hi Families!

What a fantastic week we’ve had here at the ACP!  We learned about our community and different people that help us. We pretended to be different community helpers in our classroom! We got to write and deliver mail in the writing center.  We built at a construction site in the block center. We got to be scientists and examine a bug that we found using magnifying glasses and rulers at the science table.  We pretended we were police and examined our fingerprints.  We made cinnamon goodies using cinnamon play dough in the play dough bakery.  At table toys, we learned about the different tools that our community helpers need to be successful at what they do!  A Wilmette police officer visited and talked to us about safety.  We even got to sit in the police car, see the lights and listen to the siren! We are excited to continue learning more next week! Have a wonderful weekend!
