The fourth grade math program deepens conceptual understanding, strengthens skills, encourages flexible thinking, and most importantly, excites children about the math everywhere! The Investigations curriculum, published by Pearson, stresses that the students reason about their mathematical ideas and communicate their ideas in a variety of ways. Avoca West fourth graders switch classes for math. During their math lessons, they follow a structure of Ten-Minute Math, hands-on activities, guided discussions, Math Workshops, and assessment activities.
Parents are encouraged to regularly use the Investigations Student Math Handbook with their children. The Student Math Handbook provides detailed examples of the concepts taught in class, definitions of math vocabulary, and directions for the recommended games. Unit 2: Describing the Shape of the Data (Data and Probability)
- Recording, organizing, and representing data, especially with line plots
- Using the median to describe and compare data
- Choosing a survey question and drawing conclusions based on evidence
- Describing probability with words and numbers 0 to 1
Unit 1: Factors, Multiples and Arrays (Multiplication and Division)
- Using arrays to represent multiplication situations
- Using arrays to find factors
- Finding factors and multiples of 2 and 3 digit numbers
- Practicing multiplication combinations up to 12 x 12
- Using “easier” multiplication problems to recall more difficult ones
- Finding factors of multiples of 100
- Relating factors of one number to factors of a multiple
