Tech Night Notes
September 14, 2010
Here are some of the key points discussed during the Fifth Grade Tech Night. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact your classroom teacher or Ms. Zimmer.
1. Key points from the User’s Agreement
- Laptops are provided to further academic achievement
- Downloading Music: May only download music for projects as instructed by a teacher – we use copyright free music sites
- Downloading Photos: May only download photos for educational use – we also use copyright free photo sites
- Note: We do NOT backup their music or photos!
2. Network Backup
- When students log in every morning, their laptops sync to the network and therefore will backup their documents.
- Therefore, to have a backup of their files, students MUST log out every day either before they leave school or home and log in and sync every morning at school.
3. Using the Avoca West website
- Fifth grade home page: Come back here often as a resource for grade level activities
- Student blogs
- You can access these from your teacher’s homepage
-
- You and your family/friends can make comments on your child’s page
- • Information Search QuickStart
- This link can be accessed from the “Navigation” panel of any page on the Avoca website.
- Links to copyright safe clip art and music can be found here.
- It has safe, child-friendly and age appropriate search engines to use that are preferred over Google searches. Always encourage your child to start here!
- Translation: Any content on the Avoca website can be translated into a variety of languages using the flags that appear on every page of the website!
4. Safety on the Internet
- As a parent, be proactive and know what your child is doing!
- Be aware of e-mail, Skype, chatting, Facebook
- Students need to understand the transparency of the computer/ internet
- A great website to stay current on Internet safety: commonsensemedia.com
