The fifth grade science curriculum builds upon the principles of Life, Physical, and Earth Science that were introduced in previous grade. Our science classes focus on student investigation and discovery with an emphasis on the Scientific Method. Further exploration takes place with our science resource teacher on a weekly basis.Animal Life Cycle
* Stage of invertebrate life cycle
* Animal reproduction
* Adaptation
* Inherited and learned traits
* Anatomical development
* Effects of biotechnology
Mixtures and Compounds
* Identify mixtures, solutions, colloids, compounds
* Create and separate mixtures and compounds
* Observe effects of saturation, concentration, and solubility on mixtures and chemical reactions
* Explore practical applications
Planets and Astronomy
* Learn order of planets
* Understand planetary movement in the solar system
* Recognize and locate constellations
* Define and recognize planets’ moons, asteroids, and comets
* Explore space technology and its evolution
Scientific Method
* Making observations
* Developing and testing hypotheses
* Analyzing dad
* Determining conclusions
* Scientific writing
* Exploring practical applications
5th Grade Science Fair – The Avoca West School Science Fair is held in May in the South Gym. After browsing through a number of science experiment resources, fifth-grade students select a topic or experiment in which they are interested. They determine a purpose for their experiment and make hypotheses about possible outcomes of experimentation. Once students have repeated their experiments multiple times and have collected and recorded data, they analyze their findings and draw conclusions. Finally, students display their projects on their science fair display boards and present their individual experiments to faculty members, parents, students in the school, and community members.
