English

Sixth grade English will consist of reading, writing, grammar and word study.  Throughout the reading curriculum, students will focus on studying a variety of genres, short stories and poetry.  Students will be engaged in numerous reading, literary and word study skills.

The writing curriculum will expose the sixth grade students to the Six Traits of Writing (Ideas, Organization, Sentence Fluency, Voice, Word Choice and Conventions).  Throughout the year, the sixth grade students will focus on the Writer’s Workshop process, while developing their narrative, persuasive, expository and creative writing.  Grammar skills will be intertwined throughout both the reading and writing curriculum.

The mission of the English curriculum is to develop literate individuals through a balanced program that includes:

  • An engaging and motivating curriculum that grows in complexity as students advance through each grade
  • Assessment-based, differentiated instruction to meet the unique needs of students
  • Developmentally appropriate teaching strategies

The English curriculum endeavors to inspire independent reading, writing, and critical thinking.
