Social Studies

The kindergarten social studies curriculum concentrates on political systems with a focus on the United States of America. The curriculum focuses on three major themes: citizenship, representative government and law. Opening with a unit on citizenship, children use their prior knowledge of being a member of a group to assist in understanding what it means to be a citizen. Children focus on representative government by learning the responsibilities of local and national leaders and the voting process.  The last unit, law, teaches children why rules are needed in a classroom, school and community. The curriculum encourages children to experience political systems with a hands-on approach through developmentally appropriate activities and skills.  Each unit provides a unique learning experience for children.
