Classroom Updates- February 2018!

We have been busy learning, learning, learning!

Math: We are in the heart of one of our most important math units: Adding and Subtracting up to 1,000. Students are doing a fine job trying new strategies in order to solve more complex story problems. This unit will end before spring break.

Reading: We read many fables at the start of the month. So many that they inspired many students to write their own fables. They loved reading them to the class and we all tried to take a guess at what the moral was to be learned from the short story. Now, we are reading folktales from all around the world. We read 5 different versions of Cinderella. Our favorite version was Bigfoot Cinderella!

Writing Workshop: Students were busy writing multiple fact books over the winter. They selected one to revise, edit, and publish. Those published books will make their way home next week. Next up: Collaborative writing with a partner before we move into our opinion writing unit.

Social Emotional: Passive, assertive, or aggressive? These three terms have become part of our daily language in the classroom. We have learned how to identify each one. Most importantly, we have learned how to be assertive with our friends in a respectful way that communicates how we are feeling or what we are thinking. A win-win for all!

March Happenings

Good Afternoon 2nd Grade Families,

We have been quite busy here in room 30! We had a wonderful Pajama/Stuffed Animal Party last week Friday for earning 15 whole-class compliments. We just ended our science unit on changes/states of matter, and are beginning a new social studies unit on rural, suburban, and urban communities.

Most students said they think they would enjoy living in an urban or suburban community, and a few thought that living in a rural community would be enjoyable!

Students had fun exploring different ways to separate our mystery mixture (salt and pepper). Ask your child to tell you the correct way!

In math, we have been adding together 3-digit numbers using number lines/jumps of 100s, 10s, and 1s, and breaking apart numbers by place value to recombine them more easily. We are just beginning subtraction, too! Writer’s workshop has been lots of fun for us lately as we are in the process of making audio/video recordings of our informational books that we just published! Poetry is our next unit of study in writing. As for reading, we have been learning about prefixes (mis-, under-, dis-, un-, re-, pre-) and reading biographies in reading groups.

Some friendly reminders:

*With all this new snow, please remember to pack your child with snow gear as they tend to go outside for P.E. and lunch recess if the temperature permits.

*Conferences are coming up next Wednesday and Thursday afternoon…don’t forget to sign up for a 15-minute time slot to discuss your child’s progress 🙂

*Next week Wednesday and Thursday are Half Days for students since conferences are in the PM.

*There is no school next week on Friday due to Teacher’s Institute Day.

Take care,

Mrs. Meyer

Valentine’s Day

Hello families,

We had such a wonderful Valentine’s Day in room 30! We want to thank all of you who helped to create the mailboxes and thoughtful valentines to pass out. There are some pictures from our mini celebration below. We have also been hard at work drafting our informational books and getting ready to publish them! Today we did some peer editing with one another, and I’ve included pictures of that below as well.

Art in Action!

We had so much fun at Art in Action today! Everyone got to explore a form of art, whether it was jewelry making, hip-hop dance, clay, airbrush, notebook design, and so much more! Below are some pictures of the students enjoying themselves at the event. Thank you to everyone who made this special event possible!
