The 2016 Marie Murphy Cross Country team had another successful season. This fall, the young team continued to grow with thirty-three runners in its second season of existence. Over the course of nine meets, the Running Vikings had several students finish in top positions. These students included: Boys – Kenny Dolin (8th grade), Chris Bulwa (8th grade), Jun Yoshitani (6th grade) and Will Kelly (6th grade), Girls – Josephine Yoshitani (8th grade), Lindsey Luksik (7th grade), and Bethany Bulwa (6th grade). All runners made great strides in improving their overall times as they progressed through the season. Coach Daira Tramontin and Coach Andrea Bialk were really proud of how hard the team worked throughout the fall 2016 season and look forward to potentially hosting a home meet next year!
The Marie Murphy Girls Varsity Volleyball Team placed 4th this season in the North Shore Independent Conference. The team members ranged from brand new players to athletes who were on the team all 3 years. Everyone was incredibly dedicated and willing to try anything to be their best!

Marie Murphy’s Science Olympiad team advanced to the National Tournament with a second place finish at the Illinois state tournament last week in Champaign.
Several MM students earned state titles for specific events including: Anatomy & Physiology, Crime Busters, Elastic Launch Glider, Experimental Design, Food Science, Green Generation, and Meteorology. Additionally, MM has second place finishes in: Air Trajectory, Fossils, Picture This, and Wind Power.
Narrowly missing out on a state title, the team is poised for a strong showing at the national tournament, being held May 19-22 in Menomonie Wisconsin at the University of Wisconsin Stout. MM will be competing against 60 teams from 48 states.
Marie Murphy artists earned state and national attention recently. Artwork from the 2014-2015 school year was submitted by art teacher Kelly Sabatini to celebratingart.com. Competing against artists from across the country, Marie Murphy was recognized as the 7th highest contributing school nationally and was the top ranked school in Illinois!
The 8h graders at Marie Murphy took advantage of the gorgeous weather this last weekend and held their annual Graduation Carwash Fundraiser. Working collaboratively to clean a steady stream of cars (and soak each other in the process!), the Class of 2016 raised over $2500 to offset the cost of their graduation activities. A good time was had by all! Mr. Minsley’s advisory emerged as the classroom competition winner, selling more tickets than their peers!
Marie Murphy’s Art Club, sponsored by art teacher Ms. Kelly Sabatini, is reaching new heights as they look for different mediums to showcase their talents. Initiated last year, student works are now proudly being created not on paper or canvas, but rather on ceiling tiles. Recreating masterpieces, members of Art Club are having their works displayed in the most logical place – the ceiling! The effect is an art studio that is maximizing all available space to showcase the growing talents of Marie Murphy’s young artists! Samples from the ceiling gallery are below.
On Monday, June 1st, Marie Murphy 6th grader Emilia McDougal took part in New Trier High School’s Groundbreaking Ceremony for the Winnetka Campus Facilities Project. Emilia was part of a group of 6th grade students from around the township who participated in the ceremony, as they will be part of the first class of students who will attend all four years of high school following the completion of the new New Trier.
Emilia was chosen by her teachers, principal, and superintendent in recognition of her hard work, involvement in a plethora of extra curricular activities, and overall wonderful disposition! Thank you, Emilia, for representing us well!
On Tuesday, May 26th all students participated in the Marie Murphy Olympics. Thank goodness the rain held out until the event was over! Team #1 took 2nd place under the direction of Mrs. Cunningham, Mrs. Hoffmeister and Mr. Howe. Third place was clinched by Team #2 with guidance from Mrs. Roche, Mrs. Rose-Epstein and Mr. Furman.
