We are just getting into the swing of things in the gifted department at Marie Murphy. Again this year I will be here on Wednesdays. I will see sixth grade students during fourth period, seventh grade students during eighth period, and finally eighth graders during fifth period.
To begin the year sixth, seventh, and eighth graders will be studying the history of terrorism. Given the ten year anniversary of September 11, 2001 this is a timely unit that will lend itself well to current issues and media coverage. We will be using a curriculum called “CHOICES for the 21st Century Education Program.” ”This curricula is designed to make complex international issues understandable and meaningful for students. Using a student-centered approach, Choices units develop critical thinking and an understanding of the significance of history in our lives today- essential ingredients of responsible citizenship.” www.choice.edu
We will begin by discussing what the students already know about September 11 and then begin to look at the history of terrorism. Next, we will develop our own working definition of terrorism.
The students will be asked to read some of the information at home so that they are prepared for the lesson during the following class period. Additionally, I have told all students that I expect them to check their student email accounts regularly, as this will be my primary way to communicate with them.
