2013 Marie Murphy Olympics is a Success!

On Friday, May 24th all students participated in the Olympics. Ten teams comprised of 6th, 7th and 8th graders competed against one another. Team #1 came in 1st place under the leadership of Mrs. Bialk, Mrs. Bodzweski and Mrs. von Trebra. Team #5 took 2nd place under the direction of Mrs. Salm, Mrs. Stotz and Mr. Thurston. Third place was clinched by Team #6 with guidance from Ms. Mishinger, Mr. Persino and Mrs. Piechowiak.

One Olympic record was broken and two were tied.
Congratulations to the following students:
25-yd. dash - Marion M. tied the record with a time of 3.99
50-yd. dash – Angela S. tied the record with a time of 7.1
220-yard dash - Arif A. broke the record with a time of 25.5

Weight Training and Aerobics Overview – Grade 6

Students will alternately work on weight training and aerobic activities throughout the month of April. During weight training days free weights and weight machines will be used to develop muscle strength and endurance. Students may choose from the following activities on aerobic days: treadmills, elliptical machines, stationary bicycles, rebounders, rowing machine, stepper machine, running, step aerobics and assorted aerobic workout videos.

A requirement of this unit is completing a 20-minute run. In addition to this a worksheet and quiz will be given on calculating target heart rate range. At the end of the unit a written test will be given to assess what has been learned.

Other areas of concentration include:

  • Proper lifting technique and safety
  • Proper use and safety of weight training and aerobic equipment
  • Finding and taking one’s pulse
  • Three stages of an exercise program
  • Pairing body weight and band exercises with the muscles they develop

During weight training days free weights and weight machines will be used to develop muscle strength and endurance. Students may choose from the following activities on aerobic days: treadmills, elliptical machines, stationary bicycles, rebounders, rowing machine, stepper machine, running, step aerobics and assorted aerobic workout videos.

A requirement of this unit is completing a 20-minute run. Students will be expected to know terminology associated with weight training and aerobics, and where to locate muscles on the human body. A worksheet on Body Mass Index, Healthy Eating and Physical Activity will be assigned during the middle of the month. At the end of the unit a written test will be given to assess what has been learned.

  • Lifting and transferring an object

Weight Training and Aerobics Overview – Grade 8

In the middle of the month a reading assignment on How Much Physical Activity is Enough will be be assigned and then followed up with a test. At the end of the unit a written test will be given to assess what has been learned throughout the unit.

Tumbling Overview – Grade 6

Handstand

During the month of April students will participate in the following activities:

Tumbling Skills
Stunts - individual and partner
Rope climbing – knotted and/or straight rope
Vertical wood ladder

An emphasis on safety will be stressed throughout the unit. This will include tumbling safety rules, as well as proper landing and climbing safety. Students will also receive instruction on how to spot basic tumbling skills. Assessment will occur on a daily basis. Each student will have a testing card to check-off what he or she accomplished. Students will be exposed to terminology associated with tumbling. The unit grade will be based on tumbling skills (30%), rope climbing (15%), ascending and descending a wood ladder (15%), dress/tardy/conduct (20%) and effort (20%).

Circus Arts Overview – Grade 7

Juggler Stlts

Students are participating in a circus arts unit during the month of April. The emphasis of this unit is to improve the components of skill-related fitness. Skill-related fitness helps individuals improve their performance in sports. These components include balance, co-ordination, speed, agility, power and reaction time. The following activities will be used to further develop skill-related fitness:

Balancing boards
Devil Sticks
Hula Hoops
Juggling
Pedalboards
Pedalos
Spinning plates
Stick tricks
Stilts

Assessment will occur on a daily basis. Each student will have a testing card to check-off what he or she accomplished. Check-offs must be earned from a minimum of four of the activities listed above. The unit grade will be based on skill (60%), dress/tardy/conduct (20%), and effort (20%).

Badminton Overview – Grade 8

Shuttle

Students are participating in a badminton unit during the month of April. Skill development will focus on:

Grip – forehand and backhand
Serve - forehand and backhand
Clear shot – overhead and underhand
Drop shot - overhead and underhand
Drive shot - forehand and backhand
Smash

A variety of drills are used to develop these skills. Students will be introduced to side-by-side and up-and-back positioning to cover all areas of the court. A round robin tournament will be conducted to help students practice and develop their skills. Rules and terminology associated with badminton will be emphasized. The unit will culminate with a Serving for Accuracy skill test and a written test.
