Passing - chest, bounce, one-handed push pass
Dribbling - stationary (changing levels), moving (straight, figure-eight)
Shooting Technique - BEEF (balance, eyes, elbow, follow-though)
Shots - lay-up, free throw, set shot
Defense - stance, movement, 2-1-2 zone defense
Offense - give and go, moving to a passing lane, 1-2-2 offense

A variety of drills are used to develop these skills. Additionally, the following activities may be played - Quadrant Basketball, Sideline Basketball, Basketball Tag, Captain Ball and shooting games. Rules and terminology associated with basketball will be emphasized. The unit will culminate in January with two skill tests - Baskets Made in Thirty Seconds and Figure-eight Dribble. A written test will be given the last week of the unit.

Fitness development will continue throughout this unit with line drills, running and sport-specific stretches for basketball.

Students will participate in a world dance unit during the end of November into the beginning of December. An emphasis will be placed on basic dance steps, coordination, sequencing and rhythm. Dances students will learn include:

The sixth grade participated in a round robin floor hockey tournament on the morning of Tuesday, Nov. 22nd as a culminating unit activity. The boys and girls were divided into six teams. Each team played every other team once. Everyone had fun and a lot of energy was expended!

The National Award recognizes students who score at or above the 5oth percentile on all five test items: curl-ups, shuttle run, one mile run/walk, pull-ups or flexed-arm and sit & reach.
