Tryout Information for 2011 Fall Sports

Any student trying out for a fall sport needs to attend both days of tryouts.

Volleyball – Girls

Thursday, Aug. 25 – Clinic from 3:30-5:15 PM
Monday, Aug. 29 – 1st day of tryouts from 3:30-6:00 PM for all grades
Tuesday, Aug. 30 – 2nd day of tryouts from 3:30-5:30 PM for all grades

Soccer – Coed

Wednesday, Aug. 31st -Informational meeting from 7:30 AM
Tuesday, Sept. 6 –
1st day of tryouts from 3:30-5:00 PM
Wednesday, Sept. 7
– 2nd day of tryouts from 3:30-5:00 PM

Marie Murphy Olympics is a Success!

On Wednesday, June 1 all students participated in the Olympics. Ten teams comprised of 6th, 7th and 8th graders competed against one another. Team #10 came in 1st place under the leadership of Ms. Gunderson, Mrs. Rose-Epstein and Ms. Stewart. Team #5 took 2nd place under the direction of Mrs. Salm, Mr. Schnurlein and Mr. Thurston. Third place was clinched by Team #4 with guidance from Mrs. Dion, Mrs. Hoffmeister and Mr. Katz.

Three Olympic records were broken and one was tied. Congratulations to the following students:

Lauren P. – 50-yd. dash (tied)
Arif A. – 50-yd. dash
Ilya A. – 100-yd. dash
Maggie S. – 100-yd. dash and 220-yd. run

Track and Field Overview – Grade 6

During the last week of April and into May, students participate in a track and field unit in preparation for the 2011 Marie Murphy Olympics. The event will be held on Thursday, May 26th. Sixth grade students will participate in the following events:

25-yard Dash
50-yard Dash
Softball Throw
440 Relay (4 X 110)
Shuttle Relay (12 X 50)
Mile Run
Elite Cross Country Run (qualifiers only)

Proper technique and execution will be stressed throughout the unit. Students will also learn about rules and strategies pertaining to each event. Scores achieved by students will be recorded during class. This will assist students in determining which events suit them best for the Olympics. The grade for track and field is based primarily on participation. No skill or written testing will be administered.

Spring fitness testing will be interspersed throughout this month. Below are the tests students will perform and the component of health and skill-related fitness each measures.

Curl-ups: abdominal strength and endurance
Shuttle Run: agility
One Mile Run/Walk: heart and lung endurance
Pull-ups/Flexed-Arm Hang: upper body strength and endurance
Sit and Reach: flexibility of lower back and hamstrings
