In 1991, Roots and Shoots started with a group of 16 teenagers in Tanzania. They met with Dr. Jane Goodall and discussed some problems that worried them. They discussed some problems that included pollution in the city, deforestation in the mountains, and the welfare of domestic animals. They decided they should put their work into “action". The first ever Root and Shoots project was educating villagers in Tanzania about more humane treatment of chickens at home and in the region’s market. Dr. Jane Goodall was very impressed with the passion of these young people. Many of the original members are still involved and are continuing to find new projects and new ways to make our planet a better place! Today there are over 100 countries that have Roots and Shoots clubs. Click here for more information about the National Roots and Shoots Organization.
