At our meeting Friday, February 2nd, we will be choosing a charity to benefit from our fundraisers in support of Haiti relief efforts. There are many excellent charities to choose from. How do we select one? Mr. Katz, our 8th grade social studies teacher, will take us through a process to determine which charities get the most out of each dollar donated and which spend more on administration than direct support to their cause. We have invited the Student Council and Snowflake Council, our fund-raising partners, to join us in the decision-making process.

Connecting with Our Elders
December 28th, 2009 Written by stewartn · Uncategorized
Every year, Roots and Shoots students do one project to benefit the human community. This year, we wanted that project to involve senior citizens in our communities. We want to learn about what their lives are like now, as well as when they were growing up. We want to share with them what our lives are like.
After meeting with a representative of the North Shore Senior Center (NSSC), we have decided to initiate email and snail mail correspondence with seniors who visit the Center. So that the actual addresses of the students and seniors are not shared directly, all mail will be filtered through Ms. Stewart and NSSC.
Samantha Y. has drafted a template for a first letter that will help us to initiate a conversation. You can download the template here: Seniors Letter 1 Outline
Members: If you want to get started on your letter before our next meeting (Friday 1/8/09), that would be great. Just click on the seniors letter above, download the template, and save it in your Roots and Shoots folder. REMEMBER: This is just an example, you should make the letter your own!
Happy writing!

Human Community Project: Senior Citizen Project
We are working with the senior citizens and our goal is to try and make their lives more pleasant. Our aspiration is to connect with the senior citizens. We hope to learn about the past of North Shore and learn more about the lives of the senior citizens. We want to make a difference in the community by helping meet their needs. We are really excited and think this will be a good way to connect with the past.
Here are the notes we took during our meeting with Loryn Kogan, Director of Community Relations for the North Shore Senior Center: Senior Citizen project notes
Environment Project: North Park Nature Center
For our environmental project we decide to support the North Park Village Nature Center, which is part of Chicago Park District We wrote an email to the park about our group and told them about service learning. We also wanted to get information on the place we are helping. We want to get ideas from them on how we could help the center.
Animal Project: Animal Shelter Project
This is our animal project for Roots & Shoots. We are hoping to give something to the animal shelter that they need. Some ideas we have for this project to help the shelter are:
- School Wide animal food drive
- Collecting animal toys (new)
- Fundraiser
Please let us know through comments whether you like or don’t like our ideas, or if you have others!

Today during our Roots and Shoots project work day we got TONS accomplished. We worked on the Senior Citizen project, researching different organizations in the area and also brainstorming different questions to use in either pen pal letters or for interviews. We also continued to work on the North Park Nature Center, writing an email to the park to receive feedback on their needs and how we could help them.
