Welcome Back Fall 2011

Welcome back Avoca West students and parents to a new school year that is sure to be filled with engaging, fun, learning opportunities and activities. I’m looking forward to seeing everyone this fall and hearing all about your summer adventures. At Avoca West our motto is to teach to the “whole child” for parents who are unfamiliar with PATHS, (Promoting Alternative Thinking Strategies Curriculum) it’s learning time focused on teaching your child about about social/emotional intelligence, self management strategies, responsible decision making, conflict resolution, problem solving, and strategies on how to handle if they are a victim of bullying or teasing. The goal of our program at Avoca is to enhance each child’s awareness of the diverse world around them and about how their feelings, thoughts, and actions can affect the relationships they build with those they interact with on a daily basis.

I encourage you, when you have the time to read the links I have attached on the right side under “My Favorite Links”. The articles discuss research on how social emotional intelligence has a strong impact/correlation to academic learning and how it is hugely linked to academic success. The articles also explain where the idea originated to implement SEL programs within school climates, and other schools that are integrating this type of curriculum. Soon to come I will posting a list of great books you can read with your child on related SEL topics that we discuss in class. During open house there will be a more concise description about what is taught in your child’s grade level during PATHS class. Over the school year posts will be made on my blog of projects or events that your child has been part of so please visit for updates. If you ever have any questions or concerns please feel free to email me or call and asked to be connected to ext. 357. Looking forward to a fantastic school year and see you soon!
