Event Details and Volunteer Opportunities

AVOCA WINTER CLASSROOM PARTIES - UPDATE
When: Friday, December 20th from 1:00-2:50 pm
In lieu of traditional classroom winter parties, Grades 1-5 will be working collaboratively with representatives from Fill a Heart 4 Kids to create and fill gift baskets for homeless youth. Parent volunteers can arrive at 1:30 pm and will be directed to where their class is working. Parent volunteers who signed up to bring snacks should continue to do so. Kindergarten parties will continue as usual due to the early dismissal time. Be on the lookout for information from your Room Parents.


INNOVATION GRANTS DONATION DRIVE
The Innovation Grants Appeal is underway, and we're relying on generous donations from district families to make this program a success. So far, we've raised $2,083 towards our $8,000 goal! To donate, you can make out a check payable to the Avoca PTC (Memo: Innovation Grants) or donate easily online here

CALL FOR FUN FAIR VOLUNTEERS
Did you know that the Fun Fair is the largest event of the school year and requires over 100+ volunteers? Every helping hand makes a huge difference. Sign up to volunteer today, here

MARIE MURPHY WINTER PARTY CALL OUT!
A few volunteers are needed on Friday, December 20, 2019 from 3-3:20pm to assist with snacks and drinks in the cafeteria. Contact Emily Patten to sign-up.

8th GRADE COMMITTEE CONCESSIONS - HELP WANTED!
Concession Sales from 3-5pm on game days, and from 3-3:45pm on Fridays. All proceeds go towards 8th-grade graduation. Volunteers are needed to run concessions or to donate food/drinks. Instructions will be available in the MM office. Please leave the folder in the office when you are done with your shift. To volunteer, please click here

THE *NEW* ART SMART PROGRAM NEEDS VOLUNTEERS
The Art Smart Program at Avoca West will be bringing a little art fun into the classrooms. The program supports and enriches the visual arts curriculum. It will have great success with the help and support of the parent community. Please consider volunteering in your child's classroom. Contact your Room Parent for more details on how to get involved.

This Saturday, December 14th (8:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m.), Marie Murphy School will be hosting it’s 6th annual Science Olympiad Invitational competition!  Please consider cheering on the Marie Murphy Team as they compete against twelve area schools and 23 different events!  
The Marie Murphy Book Fair starts on Thursday!

The Viking Fund
The Viking Fund provides families facing hardship with financial support to cover all or part of Avoca's athletic, Science Olympiad, band and school play fees. With the help of the community, our students will be able to continue to participate in these activities. To apply for extracurricular fee assistance, download this form and submit it to the Avoca Business Office to the attention of Beth Dever. To donate to The Viking Fund, please download this form and also submit it to the Business Office to the attention of Beth Dever.

MARIE MURPHY BOWLING CLUB

Bowling Club is new at Marie Murphy this year! We will be bowling once a month after school at the Wilmette Bowling Center. All interested students should see Mrs. Brown or Ms. Bodzewski to sign up.

For parents and teachers interested in social-emotional intelligence, Jennifer Miller will be speaking about her recent book, Confident Parents, Confident Kids: Raising Emotional Intelligence in Ourselves and Our Kids.


Wednesday, December 11, 7:00 PM @ New Trier High School, Gaffney Auditorium
Renowned palliative care physician, Dr. BJ Miller, will be interviewed about his new book, A Beginner's Guide to the End: Practical Advice for Living Life and Facing Death.  BJ Miller himself has an amazing story of recovering from a tragic accident in his college years.  His healthcare career stemmed from his personal experience with suffering, pain, and death.
