Sensory and Motor Strategies

Sensory integration can be defined by a person’s ability to organize and use information that comes from sensations within the body as well as externally. Students with sensory needs may require techniques in order to calm or alert their senses. Avoca West is fortunate to have a sensory strategy room where students are able to utilize tools and techniques to support their needs. Many students use strategies to support their sensory needs in the classroom as well. Strategies vary based on individual students’ needs but may include chewing gum, using a seat cushion, having the opportunity for movement breaks, raised lines on a piece of notebook paper or the use of a handheld object called a fidget. Our Occupational Therapist may consult with teachers and related staff to develop a sensory plan to support students.
