Visual Arts

The Three Elements of Marie Murphy’s Visual Arts Program:

TOOLS & TECHNIQUES

Students learn and apply various techniques and also the proper use and possibilities of many different media.

CONTEXT & CRITICISM

Students develop an understanding of the historic and cultural contexts in which art exists.  They also learn to evaluate their own work, that of their peers and other artists.

BIG IDEAS & HABITS OF MIND

There are a variety of themes that are found in artwork throughout time and all over the world.  Students learn about these big ideas and how they apply to their own work.  As part of their studies they also learn artistic habits of mind,  such as: flexibility, creative confidence and innovation.

Each unit of study is developed to incorporate all three of these elements in various ways with the belief that a well-rounded art education helps students grow as artists, thinkers and people.
