Close Contacts & Staying Home

Updated August 2022

  • All students who have a positive COVID test result will be required to stay home for 5 days from the positive result.

  • All students who have COVID symptoms will be required to stay home for 5 days from the onset of symptoms unless they can document a negative test result for the school nurse and symptoms have resolved or improved and there is no fever.

  • If close contacts are identified by the COVID-positive individual, those contacts are recommended to get tested immediately.

  • Students or staff who believe they have been in close contact with a COVID-positive individual in school or who are otherwise symptomatic may be offered a rapid-antigen test to be administered by the school nurse.

  • The Cook County Department of Public Health (CCDPH) may dictate more stringent measures at any time if it determines that an outbreak has occurred at a school.

  • Students will still be required to stay home if they have a fever or show other symptoms of illness that require them to stay home, per the school nurse’s typical protocols.

  • The most cautious approach means keeping students home when showing any signs of illness until students are well enough to attend and a negative COVID result is confirmed.

  • In consultation with their doctors, students and staff are otherwise recommended by State and Federal health agencies to get a COVID vaccine or booster when eligible.

American Rescue Plan (ARP)

Upon passage of the American Rescue Plan (ARP) by Congress earlier this year, Avoca District 37 has been informed it is to receive federal funding that can be allocated over more than the next two fiscal years for specific purposes related to schools recovering from the effects of COVID, including effects on student learning and social-emotional health.

This revised memo on the Opening School Protocols for the 2022-2023 School Year is required by Federal law to notify you of the basic reopening plan and operational steps we will be following as the year starts to support a successful opening of school and mitigate COVID as much as possible while conducting school in the most engaging and productive way possible. As circumstances change, please monitor communications from the District regarding how protocols and practices might likewise change.

Thanks to everyone, especially our staff and students, for modeling inclusive language and behavior as we transitioned to a mask optional environment this past week. This speaks to us at our best, and I am grateful for all the thoughtfulness our staff put into this and the care with which our students responded.

Of course, the CDC has now issued new guidance that includes more flexibility around masking. I will review this during the upcoming week and see if the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) adopts it, as it shares similarities with a range of metrics I recommended to the Board on February 17 which could be used to make decisions about mitigation levels in our schools going forward.

Included in the updated CDC guidance is the removal of a requirement for masking on school buses. Therefore, starting Monday, February 28, students riding on the bus will have the option to wear a mask or not.
