Well loved author, Betty G. Birney, visited 2nd and 3rd graders at Avoca West on Wednesday, September 26th to talk about the writing process. During the event students were engaged in a dynamic presentation and at times filled the room with squeaks and boings as they imitated Humphrey the Hamster and Og the frog-the main characters from her popular Humphrey series. Betty Birney wrote her first ‘book’ at age seven. Since then, she has written over 200 episodes for various children’s TV shows, as well as after-school specials and a TV movie. She is also the author of dozens of books for young readers, including The World According to Humphrey

Betty G. Birney has won many awards for writing for television, including an Emmy, three Humanitas Prizes, and a Writers Guild of America Award. In addition to the Humphrey series, she is the author of The Seven Wonders of Sassafrass Springs and The Princess and the Peabodys. She grew up in St. Louis, Missouri, where her parents grew up as neighbors on Humphrey Street.

Thank you to The Book Stall in Winnetka for continuing to provide outstanding literacy events for our students!
